Anyway, yesterday Jordan had a basketball game against an undefeated team. A little background on this team. We know some of the dads, through MARA, and we know that they are well connected within the organization. We have seen them operate before and have heard that when they are at the draft, they operate like "good ol' boys" and wheel and deal to get all the best players. Basically, whatever sport they are playing they cherry-pick the teams so that their son's are always on the best, and rarely lose, if ever. The chosen ones, or so they think.
Back in November, there was a pre-season tournament. Our team made the finals against them. However, 5 of our 10 players were plagued with injuries or prior commitments. So, our team came ready to play, but at a serious disadvantage. Well, the parents of the other team were heard laughing at our team's expense. Seriously? They're 12. We lost, hung in there until half time, but they ran away with it in the end, as expected.
Well, yesterday, we played them. The calls kept going against us.....their players would do the same things, but it was a 3/1 rule it seemed. For every 3x they travelled, they were only called on it once. Well, the bulk of our parents were sitting across from their team.....by accident, I swear. We were all sitting there during the end of the previous game. A few ladies and their older kids sat down in front of us, only one of which I recognized, and quickly realized they were the other teams' moms and coaches wives. Our fans were a little rambunctious due to the fact that not only were we playing the other team, we apparently were playing the refs as well.
Guess what? We won, by 10 points. Yeah, even though the chips were stacked against us, and the other team was hand selected to be the fab 5 I presume. As we were all clapping, one of the women in front of us, stood up, turned around and clapped real loud shouting, "I am so glad this game is over, great game. I have never heard such ruder fans in my life." We all just looked at her and thought various thoughts and bad words, I am sure. No one said a word to her......although we would have liked to.....
Why do people have to be such sore losers? Why can't they recognize that maybe the other team was better that day? What she failed to recognize in her ignorance and arrogance, that unlike her posse, we actually were giving their players "way to go's or great jobs" if their shots/plays were smart and well done. Didn't hear that coming from the opposing side. Of course this stemmed into a huge after game conversation in the car about people that feel they are "entitled" to better things in life because they have connections, and about how there is more to life than MARA. If I can ever teach my children anything it will be that they are entitled to nothing, and that hard work will win every time.
